LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS

MONDAY 7.30PM-9.30PM

LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS

THE LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS ARE CONDUCTED IN A VERY FREE AND

RELAXED ATMOSPHERE.

USUALLY THE SESSIONS RUN LIKE THIS:

1ST HALF: SHORT POSES USUALLY BETWEEN 5-15 MINUTES LASTING

AROUND 30 MINS IN TOTAL. THESE SHORT POSES HELP BOTH YOU THE  ARTIST AND THE MODEL TO WARM UP.

THERE IS A TEA BREAK AND ANOUNCEMENTS OF 15 MINUTES HALF WAY THROUGH WITH TEA AND OCCASIONALLY BISCUITS  PROVIDED.

THIS IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO SEE EACH

OTHERS WORK AND SOCIALISE WITH THE OTHER ARTISTS.

2ND HALF: ONE LONG SESSION FOR USUALLY AROUND 30 MINS

FINISH AROUND 9.30PM

DON'T EXPECT YOUR WORK TO BE PERFECT ON YOUR FIRST ATTEMPT,  SO SEE THE SHORT POSES AS A CHANCE TO LIMBER UP LIKE AN ATHLETE, AND PREPARE FOR BETTER WORK LATER IN THE CLASS.

THIS ALSO IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MODEL TO WARM UP, HOLDING STILL FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME DOES TAKE A LOT OF PRACTICE AND CONCENTRATION.

WHAT TO BRING???

WITH REGARDS TO YOUR CHOICE OF MEDIUM THIS IS COMPLETELY UP TO YOU. YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM EITHER PENCIL/PEN,PASTELS, GOUACHE OR OILS, THE RANGE OF MEDIUM IS YOUR CHOICE.  MOST PEOPLE BRING A PAPER PAD TO DRAW ON, BUT IF YOU WISH TO BRING WATERCOLOUR PAPER/CARD OR CANVAS THIS ALSO UP TO YOU.

THERE ARE EVENTS DURING THE YEAR WHEN LONGER POSES ARE HELD OVER TWO WEEKS.

THESE ARE GOOD OPPORTUNITIES TO PRODUCE BETTER WORK IN MEDIUMS SUCH AS OILS/PASTELS AND GOUACHE.

WE DO HAVE SOME ARTISTS BOARDS AND EASELS IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE THESE, OTHERWISE, FEEL FREE TO BRING YOUR OWN.   DESKS AND CHAIRS ARE PROVIDED.

ALTHOUGH THE LIFE DRAWING CLASSES TEND TO START AT AROUND 7.30PM WE RECOMMEND YOU TRY AND TURN UP  A LITTLE EARLIER SO THAT YOU CAN PREPARE YOUR CHAIR AND DESK. ALSO EVERYONE IS ASKED THAT THEY PUT THEIR OWN CHAIR AND DESK AWAY AT THE END OF THE CLASS. AS YOU CAN APPRECIATE EVERYONE HELPS EACH OTHER.

THE MODELS:

THE MAJORITY OF  MODELS TEND TO BE FEMALE BUT OCCASIONALLY WE DO HAVE MALE MODELS.

Outdoor Activities

By Richard Purr

Sketching, drawing and painting out of doors in whatever medium suits best is a very popular activity with many of our members. Here they can find the correct choice of subject matter most appealing to them in their production of masterpieces. Nature is a wonderful teacher and there is always experienced help at hand to enable members to find their ideal subject and to execute it under skilled guidance.

During the summer months the club arranges fortnightly local trips to venues within about a 10 mile radius of West Wickham, on a Wednesday. These begin in May and stop at the end of September. The members taking part make their own travel arrangements either with friends or individually.

In addition to the sketching days there are three coach outings a year to venues where we spend the whole day. The coach leaves West Wickham at 9o/c promptly and returns at 5o/c. The travelling time is usually one to one and a half hours which allows ample time for sketching or painting and then possibly some fine wining and dining or a pint or three at the local hostelry.

In addition to these excursions we arrange a long week-end away once a year in July or August and this has proved very popular with members sharing the very friendly atmosphere that always exists. We use College and/or University accommodation usually from a Wednesday afternoon and going home after breakfast the following Sunday morning. Typical venues are:

 Cirencester in the Cotswolds,

Chichester with its large harbour surrounded by some thirteen villages and close to the very attractive South Downs, National Park,

Writtle near Chelmsford  where the Essex and Suffolk creeks are easily reached and the countryside, made famous by John Constable, is so delightful,

Wye in the corner of Kent, the Thames Valley in the region of Henley and Marlow, the rivers of West Sussex, the Chiltern Hills, Hastings and Arundel.

We have visited all these venues and hope to return to them in the future.

We are always on the lookout for new places to go to as we change the venues for each of the above activities each year.
