Sketching, drawing and painting out of doors in whatever medium suits best is a very popular activity with many of our members. Here they can find the correct choice of subject matter most appealing to them in their production of masterpieces. Nature is a wonderful teacher and there is always experienced help at hand to enable members to find their ideal subject and to execute it under skilled guidance.
During the summer months the club arranges fortnightly local trips to venues within about a 10 mile radius of West Wickham, on a Wednesday. These begin in May and stop at the end of September. The members taking part make their own travel arrangements either with friends or individually.
In addition to the sketching days there are three coach outings a year to venues where we spend the whole day. The coach leaves West Wickham at 9o/c promptly and returns at 5o/c. The travelling time is usually one to one and a half hours which allows ample time for sketching or painting and then possibly some fine wining and dining or a pint or three at the local hostelry.
In addition to these excursions we arrange a long week-end away once a year in July or August and this has proved very popular with members sharing the very friendly atmosphere that always exists. We use College and/or University accommodation usually from a Wednesday afternoon and going home after breakfast the following Sunday morning. Typical venues are:
Cirencester in the Cotswolds,
Chichester with its large harbour surrounded by some thirteen villages and close to the very attractive South Downs in the National Park,
Writtle near Chelmsford where the Essex and Suffolk creeks are easily reached and the countryside, made famous by John Constable, is so delightful,
Wye in the corner of Kent,
the Thames Valley in the region of Henley and Marlow,
the rivers of West Sussex
the Chiltern Hills
We have visited all these venues and hope to return to them in the future.
We are always on the lookout for new places to go to as we change the venues for each of the above activities each year.
